Parking Situation Study in Leonberg
- Owner City of Leonberg
- Project period 01/2014 - 05/2014
As part of a parking study in the old town, the feasibility of promoting the Marktplatz (Market Square) to act again as the town’s central square by freeing it from motorized traffic was examined. The concern was that the existing parking spaces available will need to be compensated once the square is sealed off to motorized traffic. At present, on-street parking is permitted along certain roads in the old town. In addition, underneath the old town there is currently an underground garage and a re-purposed-for-parking bomb shelter available for public use. The attractiveness of both facilities needs to be increased if any reduction in the on-street parking space supply is to be considered. The study investigates how to achieve this and presents practical solutions and concepts for the traffic flow around the square. Employing a survey of all on-street parking spaces in the old town, the utilization level and the parking space deficit were quantified. This helped in forming a better understanding of the parking situation in the old town and in developing site specific and optimized solutions.
